What to do in Zakopane when it rains

Thermal baths, Wieliczka, museums and family attractions indoors – a practical wet-weather plan for Zakopane.

Author: Kamil Stemerowicz Last updated:

Rain in Zakopane does not have to waste the day. The right plan depends on whether showers are brief or persistent, whether thunderstorms are forecast and who is travelling with you. Below are practical options ranging from thermal baths and Wieliczka to museums and indoor family attractions.

Passing showersWait for a dry window, visit a museum and add a short walk through the centre.
Rain all dayChoose thermal baths, Wieliczka or several indoor attractions in Zakopane.
With childrenCombine an educational centre, Aqua Park or an indoor attraction with a warm meal.
For twoPlan a calm evening at the thermal baths, a museum or a café in the centre.

First check: ordinary rain or a thunderstorm?

Look beyond the rain icon and check the hourly forecast, alerts and current information for the Tatras. During thunderstorms, strong wind or very poor visibility, avoid exposed ridges and routes that are difficult to leave quickly. Wet rock, roots and wooden steps can remain slippery long after the rain stops.

Two organised options worth considering

If you do not want to build the whole day yourself, start with two trips linked to our offer. Neither is completely independent of weather, but substantial parts of each programme take place indoors or underground.

The programme, availability, prices and included services may change. Confirm the details for your date before booking.

1. An evening at Chochołowskie Thermal Baths

The evening thermal-bath trip from Zakopane includes transport and time in the pool zone. It can work well after several active days or during a wet afternoon. Confirm which zones are included, the current opening rules and what you need to bring.

2. Kraków and the Wieliczka Salt Mine

Kraków and Wieliczka from Zakopane is a full-day alternative to the mountains. The mine provides a long underground section, but transfers, access to the entrance and part of the Kraków programme are outdoors. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a warmer layer for the mine.

3. Indoor attractions in Zakopane

Consider the Tatra National Park Nature Education Centre, selected branches of the Tatra Museum, Aqua Park or another age-appropriate indoor attraction. Check current opening hours, booking requirements and any temporary closures directly with the venue before setting out.

A simple wet-weather schedule

  • Morning: museum or education centre while checking the latest forecast.
  • Lunch: allow extra time for traffic and busy restaurants.
  • Afternoon: choose a second indoor activity or a short walk only if conditions genuinely improve.
  • Evening: thermal baths or a relaxed meal close to your accommodation.
